Interesting fact: The songs from this album are constantly being played on WCSX and around the world today.
How The Boston Spaceship Got Off The Ground
Boston’s creator Tom Scholz, an MIT grad with a lifelong affinity for tinkering with gear, came to rock ‘n’ roll by way of Polaroid, where he took a job out of college and used his paychecks to subsidize a burgeoning home-recording habit. A classically trained pianist, Scholz picked up guitar in his early 20s. He initially didn’t think of it as much more than a hobby, building a basement studio for tracking a growing set of demos.
Scholz then continued to have the recipe for making an awesome band with the aid of drummer Jim Masdea and guitarist Barry Goudreau. Barry then added to the mix and found one of the best singers around, Brad Delp.
The Album took shape but time is like years to Tom Scholz. Even playing around town to master the craft live at the local level.
The Band Gets A EPIC Turnaround
Shopping the music of Boston wasn’t easy and got passed many times until Epic Records, which turned down the band once, saw something in the ruff and signed Tom and Boston to a contract.
Epic wanted to put together the album in L.A., but Tom wanted to do it himself in his basement. So he tricked the Epic Record suits and sent some of the band to L.A. while he finished the album back home.
