The One Question Everyone Wants to Know?
Have you ever stopped to ponder the deep-rooted question that has been on my mind since I was a child? Did you ever wonder why The Great Pumpkin never shows up for Linus and Sally in the Pumpkin Patch?
The Clue Was Right In Front Of Us All The Time, And We Didn't See It
Lucy is guilty of killing The Great Pumpkin!
Here's the facts as we know it. Lucy mocks Linus for writing to the Great Pumpkin, saying that he makes her the laughingstock of the neighborhood.
(Linus writes a letter to the Great Pumpkin) Lucy screams: Not again! Writing a letter to a stupid pumpkin? You make me the laughingstock of the neighborhood! All they talk about is my little brother, who always writes to the Great Pumpkin.
Lucy Van Pelt: You better cut it out right now, or I'll pound you!
Linus: There are three things that I've learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin.
The event symbolizes Linus' humiliation and refusal to submit.
Linus enters the pumpkin patch and spends the night in prayer, seeking to achieve the kind of honest belief that will summon the spirit.
Evidence That It Was Lucy Who Killed The Great Pumpkin
The movie begins with Linus and Lucy walking to the famous pumpkin patch and picking out the largest pumpkin they can find. Linus then has the task of carrying and sometimes rolling the pumpkin back to their home.
While in the house, Lucy gets the pumpkin ready for when the crime happens. Lucy cuts and guts a pumpkin that Linus carries home, causing Linus to scream, “I didn't know you were going to kill it!”.
This event symbolizes the beginning of a festival that was meant to end with the ascent of a Great Pumpkin but instead started with the execution of the Great Pumpkin.
Another Sick Theory
Lucy, at the Halloween party, uses Charlie Brown's head as the stencil for the pumpkin before carving. Could this also mean Lucy metaphorically kills Charlie Brown? Wow, this is getting deep.
It makes me want now to dig into the Peanuts Christmas movie, "It's A Charlie Brown Christmas," for even more clues.
