Rocker Steps Up To Set Record Strait As Another Van Halen Singer
Another Van Halen mystery has come to light: another lead singer was asked to join Van Halen and even cut demo tracks with Eddie and Alex.
Following Van Halen’s split with Sammy Hagar, the band tried out Mitch Malloy as its new frontman. Together, they demoed a song titled “It’s the Right Time.” However, Malloy was dissatisfied with the band’s then status and decided not to join, leading to vocalist Gary Cherone and Van Halen III recruitment.
How Many Lead Singers Did Van Halen Have?
Since 1974, Van Halen has had three different lead singers, two of whom have served more than one stint in the band. David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar each spent more than a decade in the group.
Van Halen also had lead singer Gary Cherone, the former frontman of Extreme. The band had one album, Van Halen III, and one album of songs is still out there, but the band scrapped the next album.
Two other strange picks from Alex Van Halen’s book, “Brothers.”
Alex has said he hopes to recruit Plant to sing on new music, even though they haven’t spoken since 1993. Alex and Eddie Van Halen had plans to make an album with Ozzy Osbourne, but the Osbournes’ reality show took precedence. Ozzy has said that he regrets not making the album.
New Info From Rocker Mitch Malloy That He Was Asked By VH
Mitch Malloy was the former lead vocalist for the rock band Great White from 2018 to 2022.
Mitch Malloy speaks out in recent interviews on Guitar.com: “Instead of being celebrated as Van Halen’s first choice to replace Sam, I’m left with sticking up for myself. It’s not right and it’s not fair to me. And I’m kinda pissed.”
When Van Halen parted ways with frontman Sammy Hagar in 1996 and before Gary Cherone joined the fold the same year, the band auditioned several singers, including Mitch Malloy.
During that interim period, Malloy demoed a song with the band titled It’s The Right Time, which has now been posted to Malloy’s YouTube channel with a caption that, in his view, sets the record straight on the timeline of Van Halen’s official singers.
Mitch explains that he was Van Halen’s official third singer and had asked the band not to disclose this and instead go with the narrative that Gary Cherone was their third frontman.
“Van Halen’s third singer was Mitch Malloy in 1996,” the caption reads. “Mitch asked the band not to disclose this. It was later discovered and incorrectly documented, and after more than a decade of silence, Mitch was forced to correct the record.
Mitch Malloy Puts Out VH Demo On YOUTUBE
“This song was written by Mitch Malloy and Eddie Van Halen. It’s Mitch Malloy in Van Halen. It’s not an official release and it’s not for sale. It’s a gift from Mitch.”
As the story goes, Malloy opted not to join Van Halen as he was dissatisfied with the band’s creative direction, which led to the recruitment of Gary Cherone instead.
But in the video’s comments, Malloy expresses that he’s not happy that he’s often forgotten from the Van Halen history books, writing: I should be able to benefit from the art I worked my entire life to perfect.
What Does Alex Van Halen Say About This News?
There has been no response from Alex Van Halen or the VH camp. Mitch Malloy has a copy of the letter turning down the offer to join. I think it would have been a great choice. Mitch is an incredible artist, both alone and in his solo efforts. All we can say is, What If? What could have been a pretty cool page in Van Halen’s History?
