Detroit Dedicates New Fisher House, a Home for VA Hospital Patients’ Families
Detroit’s Fisher House Is Almost Here—And It’s a Game-Changer
Six years. One mission.
And now, the 99th Fisher House in the world is ready to make its mark—right here in Detroit.
A Home for Heroes’ Families
Located at 7618 Woodward Ave., just 1.5 miles north of the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, this 16-suite facility isn’t just a building. It’s a lifeline for families of veterans receiving care at Detroit’s VA hospital.
Starting January 2025, these doors will officially open to provide a home away from home. And here’s the best part? It won’t cost families a dime.
Why Detroit Needed This
Veterans and their loved ones deserve support. But Detroit’s VA hospital doesn’t offer a hotel program, leaving families to figure things out on their own. Not anymore.
Back in 2018, Fisher House Michigan saw the need and made a bold move—they started planning. Over the years, $10 million was raised for construction and furnishings. The VA contributed another $3.3 million for the land. And by September 2023? The dream turned into reality.
Built by the Fisher House Foundation, this facility is now a gift to the Department of Veterans Affairs—a symbol of what community, dedication, and action can achieve.
“We at Fisher House Michigan understand how important it is to be part of the community,” said Andy Hoag, vice president of Fisher House, in an interview with FOX 2 Detroit.
Community at the Core
Fisher House Michigan Executive Director Kate Melcher said the need for the Fisher House in the Detroit community was huge since the VA hospital doesn’t have a hotel program for veterans.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan couldn’t agree more: “There is no neighborhood in the city right now coming back faster than the North End.”
He’s right. This isn’t just a step forward—it’s a leap.
A Bold Statement of Support
When a veteran or service member is hospitalized for medically essential reasons, their family doesn’t need to worry about where to stay. At Fisher House, stays are always free.
This is more than a house. It’s hope, comfort, and a reminder that we take care of our own.
