“Better Man” by Pearl Jam – Eddie Nearly Gave The Song Away
“Better Man” by Pearl Jam is one of the more personal songs of Eddie Vedder. The song tells of a woman who settles for a man because she thinks she can’t do better. Eddie channeled his life and stepfather for this song.
Eddie Vedder was born to Karen Lee Vedder and Edward Louis Severson Jr. His birth name is Edward Louis Severson III. His parents split when Eddie was a baby. His mother married Peter Mueller soon after. Eddie grew up thinking that Mueller was his birth father. Vedder didn’t know Severson was his birth father until after Severson had passed away from MS.
The song “Alive” is about Eddie finding out that Mueller is his stepfather, not his father. “Better Man” is about feeling like his mom settled for an abusive husband because she needed help paying the bills.
“Better Man” By Pearl Jam – Live at MSG
Eddie plays guitar on this song. It’s always been one of my favorites live. It’s a special moment. Most times, Eddie is the only one on stage when then song begins.
I’ve been to more than my fair share of Pearl Jam concerts and every time the crowd sings along. Most times, Eddie has let the crowd carry a good chunk of the song… he just let’s us go. In my opinion, Eddie Vedder is one of the best front men of our time.
Eddie Tried to Give The Song to Greenpeace
“Better Man” was originally recorded for the album Vs. but Eddie decided that he wanted to give it to Greenpeace instead and have Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders sing lead. Chrissie didn’t show for the recording so the deal fell apart and Pearl Jam ended up putting the song of Vitology.
