Spin Doctors to Drop First Album in 12 Years – ‘Face Full of Cake’
After a lengthy break, Spin Doctors will drop “Face Full of Cake” on April 11. This is their first album in 12 years and their first with Capitol Records.
They recorded at Jack Daley’s Asbury Park studio and a Vermont spot owned by Phish’s Mike Gordon. The project began taking shape when COVID lockdowns began.
“We weren’t really thinking of it as a record… When we made this record, we captured a moment where it felt effortless. There’s a really fresh energy in the tracks [and] a sense of us discovering the songs as we played them,” said drummer Aaron Comess to Music Weekly.
Since their 2013 album “If the River Was Whiskey,” the band has taken a new direction. Their new song, “Still A Gorilla,” packs more energy while keeping their signature sound.
Chris Barron is excited for fans to hear it. “They’re going to be knocked out by this new record… It’s got that vintage sound that harkens back to ‘Pocket Full of Kryptonite’ but with years of experience under our belts.”
The album features 12 tracks, opening with “Boombox” and ending with “When You Got Turmoil In Your Mind. ” The band starts touring with an April 12 show at Brooklyn Bowl, and dates run through 2025.
The band remains intact, with Barron on vocals, Eric Schenkman on guitar, Comess on drums, and Daley on bass. Their debut album, released in ’91, sold over 10 million copies worldwide, driven by hits like “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” and “Two Princes.”
