Make Your Own Samoas – Definitely Don’t Do It

Like pretty much everyone, I love Girl Scout cookies, but we can only get them once a year during Girl Scout Cookie time. Samoas are one of my favorites and…

Don’t let these delicious looking cookies fool you… the amount of work that goes in behind them may make you think twice.

Like pretty much everyone, I love Girl Scout cookies, but we can only get them once a year during Girl Scout Cookie time. Samoas are one of my favorites and I foolishly thought, "You could make your own Samoas" and I did, but I don't recommend it.

Once a year, in February, the Girl Scouts roll out the cookies and we buy them no matter the price because we know the money helps the Girl Scouts do more for their members and the cookies are delicious. But sometimes we want Samoas when they're not available. At that point, you may be tempted to make your own Samoas... don't do it.

Part of Girl Scout cookie time is the fact that you can only get them during that one time of the year. But what if you ran out of cookies months ago and you really want a Samoa? You have some options, but the options aren't the same. Several stores have knock-off brands. I love these stores and appreciate their efforts, but none of them: Kroger, Walmart, or Aldi have cookies that are just like Samoas... there can be only one.

So You Want to Make Your Own Samoas...

You will need to block of some time. I used the Samoa recipe on Serenalissy.com. The recipe was good but this line would offend me later: "This recipe is a lot easier than you might think and it uses basic pantry ingredients." "Easier," you say. You forgot the word "not."

If you are strong of heart and kitchen and decide, "I can do this!" Then know that you are going to want to make these cookies over a two day period or start the cookies early in the day and clear your schedule. First you have to make the dough, let it chill, roll it out and use the cookie cutter. By the way, they will ask for things like double boilers and donut cutters, I didn't have either so I improvised.

I didn't have a donut cutter or round cookie cutter so I used the top of a sifter and the lid from my dog's allergy medicine (both were washed beforehand).

After you bake the cookies, you need to toast coconut and create caramel sauce. Then you need melted chocolate to finish things off. Do I think my "Make Your Own Samoas" look delicious? yes, but don't be fooled. The cookies tasted good, but I didn't think they were worth the effort unless Girl Scout Samoas were unavailable and it was a really special occasion, You can check out the video of my "make your own Samoas" experience below.... but I filmed it myself and that was also a learning experience.

I used time lapse on parts of the cookies were so time consuming... Just buy the Girl Scout cookies! Learn from my mistakes.
