National Weather Service (NWS) officials confirmed on Tuesday, April 1, that five tornadoes touched down on Sunday, March 30, in Cass, Ingham, Kent, and Newaygo counties. The Detroit News reported the following tornado confirmations:
Officials with the weather service's Northern Indiana office stated that the first, an EF1, originated in Edwardsburg, Cass County, at about 4:52 p.m. The NWS said this tornado was on the ground for about three minutes and measured about 100 yards wide with peak winds of 90 mph. No injuries or deaths were reported.
The weather service's Grand Rapids office confirmed a second tornado, an EF0, touched down at about 5:42 p.m. in Caledonia, Kent County. This NWS office said the tornado had winds of 80 mph, was about 150 yards wide, and traveled approximately 4.2 miles from about 100th Street and Eastern Avenue northeast to 84th Street and Hanna Lake Avenue.
Weather service officials said a third tornado, also an EF0, was confirmed in Grant, Newaygo County, at about 6:05 p.m. This tornado had peak winds of 65 mph. It measured approximately 50 yards wide and traveled approximately 2.8 miles from north of East 120th Street near Poplar Avenue to north of East 104th Street near South Tall Oak Trail in about four minutes. Officials said the tornado moved across mostly open fields but damaged some trees and impacted two electric utility transmission towers along Oak Avenue.
A fourth, also an EF0, touched down at 6:20 p.m. in Leslie, Ingham County. The NWS Grand Rapids office reported that this tornado had winds of about 75 mph, was about 50 yards wide, and traveled 2.7 miles. According to the NWS, the twister caused minor damage to homes and destroyed several outbuildings.
The Grand Rapids office reported that a fifth tornado, an EF1, touched down at approximately 6:40 p.m. near Williamston, Ingham County. This twister had peak winds of about 110 mph, was about 150 yards wide, and traveled approximately 5.3 miles. NWS officials said the twister damaged multiple houses, including a two-story home that had its roof lifted off. According to the NWS, several other homeowners reported roof and siding damage to their properties.
