This fall, sound artists will transform U-M's Chip Davis Technology Studio into a mind-bending audio playground. Over twenty-five creators from across the globe will push the limits of a massive 32-speaker system during the Spaceout International Ambisonics Festival.
Sound wizards from four continents will meet in Ann Arbor on October 16-17, 2025. Artists from Japan to Brazil will craft sonic worlds using advanced ambisonics - a technique that wraps listeners in waves of sound.
The first night kicks off with the Performance Systems Collective. Nine artists - Michelle Boisvert, Scarlett Jiang, Victor Kim, Ian Rhee, Day Rickett, Sasha Semina, Hyunkyung Shin, Naomi Wolfe, and Anıl Çamcı - will bend sound in ways never heard before.
While the studio fits just a small crowd, its state-of-the-art setup lets sounds float and swirl through the space. Listeners will find themselves inside a bubble of pure audio magic.
New works will debut at the 2025 gathering. Masafumi Oda brings "turbulence of time IV" to life, as Henrik von Coler unveils "AUTOTUNE." The night also features Elois and Renan Zelada's "14:13:12" and Yuting Wu's "Debris."
U-M's own talent takes center stage too. Co-organizer Zeynep Özcan joins forces with Anıl Çamcı from the Performing Arts Technology department. Ph.D. student Eloysa Zelada, who turns weather patterns into music, will share her piece "Summer Echoes."
The second day splits into two parts. Greg Dixon, Bonnie Han Jones, and Eduardo Nespoli fill the afternoon air with sound. As night falls, Sasha Semina, Alexandria Smith, and Alberto Valdivia Flores close out the festival.
Find your way to the Earl V. Moore Building at 1100 Baits Drive in Ann Arbor. While there's no cost to attend, spots are scarce - grab yours fast.
