Work starts this spring at Nowicki Park, marking the first step in Rochester Hills' bold push to build Michigan's finest parks. The 35-acre site breaks new ground in the city's northwest zone, where no park has stood before.

Plans call for winding paths, play zones, gardens that draw butterflies and bees, plus a split dog park where big and small pets can run free. By 2027, officials hope to finish the site.

"No one in southeast Michigan is investing more in parks than Rochester Hills, and this new park will be a masterful blend of innovative family fun with acres of quiet undisturbed nature," said Mayor Bryan Barnett at the State of the City address on September 18, according to Oakland County Times.

Last year saw crowds flood the parks - 1.7 million guests set a new record. Spencer Park will soon boast fresh water fun spots, an updated beach, modern play sets, and a path that winds above the water.

At 694 S. Rochester Road, the city bought nine acres once known as The BeeKeeper property. This patch links to Cloverport Green Space and the Clinton River Trail. Meanwhile, Bloomer Park will add areas to sit, watch wild birds, and ride bikes on a pump track within two years.

The city scored more than $85 million in grants over three years. Rochester Hills stands alone as Michigan's first debt-free city of its size, while keeping taxes low - second-lowest among Oakland County's 31 cities.

The public loves their parks. A mid-2025 study found almost everyone - 98% - gave parks top marks. The same check showed 94% think life in the city shines.

The city ranks first in Michigan and ninth in the whole country for good living, says U.S. News & World Report. FBI stats prove it's safe too - tops in Michigan and fifth nationwide.

Next year brings changes to Brooklands Plaza at 1585 E. Auburn Road. Workers will make the splash zone three times bigger, add fresh play spots, water fun, and places to rest.
