Over the years, Nov. 29 has witnessed many notable moments and stories involving sporting legends. Here are some of them.

Unforgettable Games and Remarkable Records

Great moments in sports history from Nov. 29 included:

  • 1894: In the third Iron Bowl, Alabama beat Auburn 18-0.
  • 1909: Australasia won the International Lawn Tennis Challenge.
  • 1924: Queen's University beat the Toronto Balmy Beach 11-3 and won their third straight Canadian Football League Grey Cup title.
  • 1934: The Chicago Bears beat the Detroit Lions 19-16 in the first National Football League game that was broadcast nationally.
  • 1947: The Toronto Argonauts beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 10-9 for their third straight win and eighth Grey Cup title.
  • 1952: In the 17th Iron Bowl, Alabama beat Auburn 21-0.
  • 1960: Navy halfback Joe Bellino won the Heisman Trophy.
  • 1966: The Oakland Coliseum hosted its first NBA game, and the Warriors beat the Bulls 108-101.
  • 1971: The first Walt Disney World Open Golf Championship took place.
  • 1976: The New York Yankees signed free agent Reggie Jackson to a five-year contract.
  • 1987: Quarterback Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49ers completed 22 passes in a row, an NFL record at the time.
  • 1987: The New York Rangers' Bob Froese became the second goaltender to score a goal. However, it was later ruled that he shouldn't have gotten credit for the goal.
  • 1992: The Calgary Stampeders beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 24-10 and won the CFL Grey Cup. The MVP of the game was quarterback Doug Flutie, who went 33 of 49 for 480 yards and two touchdowns.
  • 1998: Àlex Corretja completed a comeback, beat Carlos Moya, and won his only ATP Tour World Championships tennis title.
  • 2008: In the 73rd Iron Bowl, Alabama beat Auburn 36-0, Alabama's first win in the series in seven years.
  • 2009: Nikolay Davydenko won his only ATP World Tour Finals tennis title.
  • 2015: Great Britain beat Belgium and got their first win in the Davis Cup since 1936.
  • 2015: Driver Lewis Hamilton finished second in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix. He also won his third overall and second straight World Drivers Championship title.
  • 2015: The Edmonton Eskimos beat the Ottawa Redblacks 26-20 and won their 14th CFL Grey Cup.
  • 2021: Lionel Messi won a record seventh Ballon d'Or award.

Three athletes who stood out on Nov. 29 were Doug Flutie, Àlex Corretja, and Lionel Messi.

Flutie is famous for his legendary "Hail Mary" touchdown pass in a 1984 college game that helped him win the Heisman Trophy. Corretja is a Spanish former professional tennis player who reached a career-high ranking of world No. 2 and won 17 ATP singles titles. Messi's fame comes from a career defined by success with clubs such as Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain as well as being a leader for the Argentinian national team.
