Nonprofits across Detroit need help this holiday season. Some want assistance year-round. Meal deliveries, food service, tutoring, and building projects all require extra hands.
Forgotten Harvest depends on volunteers who rescue extra food and get it to hungry families. "We depend greatly on our volunteers to help us fulfill our mission of relieving hunger and maintaining the health of our community by rescuing surplus nutritious food and distributing it to neighbors in need," the group stated in an interview.
The Detroit Area Agency on Aging needs drivers. Older adults wait for hot meals during the holidays. Will you bring them food and a smile? The group asks people to join them in bringing hot meals, warm smiles, and holiday cheer to older adults across the community.
Grace Centers of Hope has work both on their property and off it. You might serve meals. You could tutor kids or paint houses in Little Grace Village. Groups and solo helpers are welcome. "Volunteers are what makes Grace Centers of Hope what it is, a community reaching out and serving those in need," the group said while chatting with the press.
Habitat for Humanity Michigan wants builders. Hammers and paintbrushes make houses into homes. The group believes everyone deserves a safe and decent place to call home.
The Salvation Army rings bells each winter. But they need more than that. Disaster relief takes workers too. "From ringing bells during the holiday season to distributing supplies in the wake of a local disaster and serving food to the hungry, volunteers are the backbone of The Salvation Army's efforts to help those in need," the group states.
Focus: HOPE takes helpers in every department. "We wouldn't be Focus: HOPE without volunteers," the group said. "Generous support from volunteers helps us expand our impact — and provides a meaningful experience for those donating their time to support their community."
Want more options? The United Way of Southeastern Michigan runs a volunteer portal. Dozens of groups post their needs there.
