Free Bikes 4 Kidz distributed refurbished bikes to children on Saturday, Dec. 13, in Detroit. Kids picked out their own wheels like they were shopping at a real store. Helmets came with each one.

Bob Barnes runs the nonprofit. "They get to shop for a bike as if they were at a bike shop," said Barnes, according to ClickOnDetroit. "They get sized for a helmet, so they're going to get a helmet, and they get to take that bike home today."

The group gathered roughly 800 bikes from Local 4's Go For It event last summer. Before anyone could take one home, volunteers repaired each donated bike to guarantee safe rides.

Jeff Carek fixed bikes at the event. He talked about what he saw. "The best part is that when the kids come in today and shop, and you'll see it in the smiles on their faces," Carek said. "They do not care that this bike was preloved; they just know that they're going to get a bike that they're able to love and ride."

The kids who got bikes couldn't contain their joy. Marien, one recipient, said, "I'm really excited. I always wanted me a bike."

Christian had big plans for his new ride. "I'm going to ride around and I'm going to give my old bike to my dad and let my friends ride it when they come over," Christian said.

Barnes thought about what this means. "You think about the difference that's going to make in so many kids' lives," Barnes said.

These bikes aren't just toys. Kids can pedal to school, meet up with friends, or just ride around the block on a Saturday afternoon. The organization targets children who wouldn't otherwise get a bike, making sure each one goes where it's needed most.
