Kuzzo's Chicken and Waffles in Detroit shut its doors after 11 years. The restaurant broke the news Monday evening through social media, teasing what might come next for the brand.
"We're closing this chapter of Kuzzo's Chicken and Waffle with full hearts," the statement read, according to The Detroit News. "While it's bittersweet, we're excited to move our family and brand toward new ventures and new possibilities."
Red velvet waffles were a specialty, along with fried chicken, salmon patties, and grits. Ron Bartell, a former St. Louis Rams player who grew up in Detroit, owned the place.
Doors opened in early 2015 at 19345 Livernois, just north of Seven Mile. Construction on Livernois forced a closure in 2019, which also gave time for renovations and updates. The spot reopened just before the pandemic struck.
Detroit artist Desiree Kelly created work that hung throughout the dining room. Her pop portraits featured Notorious B.I.G., Diana Ross, and Whitney Houston.
"Thank you, Detroit, for believing in us, rocking with us, and making this journey unforgettable," the Monday announcement stated. "This isn't goodbye, it's see you soon."
Customers received thanks for years of support. "None of this would have been possible without the love, loyalty and support you've shown us over the years."
The brand hinted at more to come. The statement ended with "Stay tuned for what's next."
