This weekend is a big one for my first “Woman who Rocks”. Her name is Laura Neese and she is a musher.
Laura is currently prepping her 14-dog team for the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race. It starts Feb. 3 and runs from Fairbanks, Alaska, all the way to Whitehorse, in Canada’s Yukon territory.
Laura is 21 years old and lives in McMillan, Michigan where she works and trains her dogs at Nature’s Kennel. The dog team she arrived in the Yukon with are some of Nature’s Kennel’s most well-known racers. Ten of the dogs were on her Iditarod team. The other four are new to what she’s dubbed “the A team.”
I spoke with Laura about the race she is competing in this weekend, the Iditarod, and what it takes to be a dogsledder and compete in 1000 mile plus journeys through the Alaskan Wilderness.
Listen to her story and you will understand why she is a WCSX “Woman Who Rocks”.
