Are you familiar with the Ann Arbor carrots? They stand on Carrot Way (no joke). On the outskirts of Ann Arbor, just off of US-23, you will find six massive carrots ranging in size from 4-10 feet. They are the landmark for Food Gatherers.
Food Gatherers – Michigan’s First Food Rescue
Food Gatherers was founded back in 1988 by folks from Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor. They wanted to do something to save food from spoiling and get it those who needed it. They created Food Gatherers and became the first food rescue in Michigan. Today, Food Gatherers works as a food rescue AND a food bank. Last year Food Gatherers got nearly 10 million pounds of food out to Washtenaw County citizens who were dealing with food insecurity,
When we visited Food Gatherers, we spoke with Charlotte Csicsila, Chief Development Officer and got a tour of the facility. Food Gatherers has a great vibe and they couldn’t do all they do without volunteers. There are a bunch of ways to help out. Click on GET INVOLVED to find out how to support our local food rescue and bank. Before you scroll down to check out the info on the carrots, here’s a video explaining some of what Food Gatherers does:
The Ann Arbor Carrots Get a Makeover
Last year, out of nowhere, Food Gatherers was contacted by Calista Dillion, a fine arts student from Ohio. Eileen Spring, the CEO of Food Gatherers said she thought she was being pranked at first because the timing was so amazing. Calista sent them an email explaining that she worked in cement art and offered her talents. Calista rocked it. The carrots look amazing. She even put an inscription on one.
