Dotty's Dog House has a roof made of stuffed animals and three chid-sized photo ops on the front. A large shoe pile is next to the house. Doyy's Dog HOuse sits on the corner of the Heidelberg Project block.

Rockin’ Road Trips stopped by and took advantage of the sunshine and blue skies to check out The Heidelberg Project: an amazing block of urban art started 40 years ago by Tyree Guyton. Tyree wanted to make art more accessible to those that might not make it in to a museum so he started creating art where he grew up… on Heidelberg Street in Detroit.

The art of The Heidelberg Project is not your typical art. Tyree creates art using thrown away items. Pictured below is the Vacuum Graveyard (I made up display names for my favorite pieces).

A bunch of vacuums with different types of cleaning and gardening gloves stuck on the tops of the vacuums. RIP

I love this piece. A bunch of vacuums with different types of cleaning and gardening gloves stuck on the tops of the vacuums. RIP

The Heidelberg Project: The Dotty Wotty House

The art Tyree started creating back in 1986 has spilled over to the entire block on Heidelberg. There’s even a house just off of Heidelberg that has been claimed as part of the project. Tyree’s mother Betty still lives in the Dotty Wotty House on Heidelberg and Tyree is still creating art.

The main house of the Heidelberg Project. The house is 2 stories tall. It is painted white with giant colorful polka dots.

Being on the street was pretty magical. The block is an extremely creative space.

Take a Tour!

The hours of operation are as follows, “The outdoor art environment is free and open to the public daily, from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.” That’s per Heidelberg.org I suggest checking the website out. It’s got great info about their history and best practices for being a considerate guest on Heidelberg Street. You can also make donations there. The Heidelberg Project helps the surrounding neighborhoods with upkeep (lawn mowing repairs of neglected properties etc).

I walked up and down the street, did it again and saw completely different things. It’s a lot to take in. I noticed there was a time theme through many pieces: either clocks our just various times written on different art pieces. They also have an exceptional amount of shoes. Shoes used in art pieces… a big pile of shoes, and shoes hanging from a fence. Video next: pictures below.

Walk Through The Heidelberg Project

If you haven’t been, I highly recommend. The Heidelberg Project is a unique Detroit landmark with amazing spirit and history.
