In 1989, American Artist Billy Joel released his 11th studio album Storm Front. One of the many singles that came off this LP was one titled “Downeaster Alexa” The song’s lyrics describe many things about fishing and is loaded with terminology that anglers cast back to one another when going on the water. Many of the terms heard in the song could be overheard at Lake St. Clair Metropark as the Lake St. Clair Walleye Association hosted their annual Kids Fishing Tournament.
The LSCWA was founded in 1976 and for years has been providing the Eastside of Metro Detroit with countless conservation efforts with DNR to preserve and raise the count of Walleye fish in Lake St. Clair. In addition to these efforts, the Walleye Association has sponsored, hosted and participated in numerous activities with the community.
As stated on their founder’s page, the LSCWA is, “A family group the club activities include monthly meetings with guest speakers and fishing videos, an annual picnic, Christmas Pot-Luck Dinner and separate Kid’s Christmas Party, a Kid’s Summer Fishing outing and a Kid’s Ice Fishing Outing. Monthly walleye fishing derbies are held during the summer season with individual and team divisions for adults and children.”
It was family fishing fun that took over the shores of Lake St. Clair Metroparks as their annual Kid’s fishing tournament netted a sold-out crowd. The 5–16-year-old anglers who participated brought many species of fish up on shore to be weighed and measured for the plethora of prizes to be given out to the top fishers of the day.
While prizes for fishing were being distributed, it was the promo team under the 94.7 WCSX tent that had plenty of prizes themselves and had the LSCWA lining up to snag some swag. A special thank you to Joe Hall of the Metroparks, as well as the members of the LSCWA including Walleye Rich, Captain Tim and Dan Schmidt.
