Looking out and seeing a supermoon is super cool in my book. This weekend (August 11-14th, 2022) is our last super moon of the year. In fact, we won't have another supermoon until August of 2023.
According to NASA, if you want the best shot to view the supermoon, The Sturgeon moon will be at its peak on Thursday night (8-11-22), at about 9:36 p.m. EDT. It should appear nearly full on Friday and Saturday as well. There's a cool viewing event in Troy at Stargazing at Stage Nature Center. In addition to the Sturgeon Moon, we also have another celestial event this weekend: the Perseids meteor shower. This shower has been happening since July, but it will peak between Friday and Saturday. If you want the best shot to see the shower, it's going to be Up North (away from populated areas where skies are clearer). Look North (away from moon) around midnight.
According to CBS News, The Maine Farmer's Almanac started publishing Native American names for full moons back in the 1930's. Algonquin tribes that lived in the northeastern U.S. called the full moon in August the Sturgeon moon after the large fish that were more easily caught that same time of year in the Great Lakes.
We're celebrating on The Power Lunch with a Blue Plate Special: Songs about the Moon, stars, and everything OUT OF THIS WORLD! The Power Lunch happens from noon til 1 pm Monday through Friday. Enjoy the super moon and remember what Casey Kasem said, "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars."
