In 1817, land surveyors reported to Michigan Governor Lewis Cass that the land around Oak Park was uninhabitable and “must remain in possession of wild beasts”.
A few pioneers settled in what was later to become Oak Park in 1840. The land at that time was swampy- so they drained the swamps, cleared the land, and began to build houses.
Oak Park remained mostly undeveloped until 1914, when large portions of land were sold to the Majestic Land Company to divide and develop. They called their first subdivision Oak Park because of the large number of oak trees in the area.
Legendary Detroit Tigers players Al Kaline and Norm Cash both lived just a few blocks from each other in Oak Park in the late 1950’s. Today Oak Park residents are a mix of races, cultures, and religions all living together in harmony.
The previous slogans of Oak Park were “The Family City” and “The City with a Future”. Today Oak Park uses “Community, Culture and Commerce”.
