This Detroit Lions had a great thing going in the 2022 season. Because of that, man fans, myself included, woudl love the kep the current roster and just add talent where needed.

But, as we enter free agency, of course that isn't a possibility. The Lions have to make tough choices, and some of them are more popular than others.

Read on for the scoop on what's going down with the team and this unreal decision.

Jamaal Williams

Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes had made some great choices since joining the team, but this new one has many fans unhappy. This week, Holmes and Dan Campbell agreed to a three-year, $18 million deal with former Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery. That, in essence, meant saying farewell to popular running back Jamaal Williams.

What's the point?

I'm personally shocked and confused. Jamaal Williams had so much heart and openly talking about how much he loved being in Detroit. Perhaps more importantly, Williams had the stats. Snagging Montgomery from the Bears, who had a terrible season, seems like a wrong move to me. Of course, Montgomery also has good stats- similar, and perhaps even a bit better. But is a bit better worth such a drastic move? In my opinion, no.

I love it when WRIF listeners get in on the conversation, and some WRIF listeners are commenting on this story and saying that Williams actually wanted out and rejected a Lions contract. If this is true, that's a big bummer and definitely puts the blame on Williams.

Where is Jamaal Williams going?

It didn't take long for Jamaal Williams to snag a new gig. Williams has agreed to a contract with the Saints, according to multiple reports. Williams had 262 carries for 1,066 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, which all mark all career highs. So, of course another team would take him right away.

Another option for Jamaal Williams

Jamaal Williams is reportedly going to New Orleans. That said, he had plenty of options. Tyler Dunne, founder of Go Long, has this to say: "Free agency nugget to pass along. There’s mutual interest in Jamaal Williams returning to Detroit, but a source told me today that Buffalo, Cincinnati and the New York Jets are all very interested in the running back."

People are unhappy- and they should be

Chris Burke, the NFL Draft editor for The Athletic, says it best. "Lions asked Jamaal to help them fix a shattered culture. He did that, beyond any expectation, then tossed in 1,000 yards and 17 TDs as a bonus. If this stays on the right track, he’ll have been a *huge* reason why." He adds, "But you also don’t want your GM making decisions with his heart."
