5 Places To Celebrate Cinco De Mayo In Detroit

Cinco de Mayo is almost here! The Fifth of May holiday recognizes Mexico's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Contrary to popular belief, the day doesn’t commemorate Mexican independence. Mexico declared its independence more than 50 years before the Battle of Puebla.

You can join in on the festivities and celebrate with family and friends. Across Detroit, there will be lucha libres, live performances, food festivals, karaoke and more.

This year, Cinco de Mayo falls on a Friday. So, what better way to kick off your weekend than celebrating with great food, wonderful drinks, fabulous music, and great vibes? In addition to celebrating at local restaurants and businesses in Mexicantown, Southwest Detroit, you can also enjoy events happening throughout the city.

The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta returns this year. Taking place at 21st and Bagley, it's presented by the Mexican Patriotic Committee. Alma Cruz, the president of the committee, told El Central Hispanic News that the event is going to be a three-day celebration. It will be open every day that weekend until 8 p.m., except on Sunday when it closes at 7 p.m. "The Parade will be part of the finale down the W. Vernor Hwy. corridor on Sunday, May 7th starting at 12noon." Cruz said. "Streets leading to W. Vernor will start closing at 11:30am. and open back up around 2:30 p.m."

Tickets are available for Lucha Detroit on May 5. It's your chance to see top talent from Mexico live in show wrestling. The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Garden Theater at Midtown.

This annual Cinco de Mayo festival is a day full of celebrating Latin music, arts, and culture with live performances, food, and vendors. The event takes place on May 7 at El Club located at 4114 W. Vernor Hwy, Detroit.

It's a karaoke Cinco de Mayo fiesta! The event will feature food from Pablo's Tacos, alcohol, and karaoke. Catch this event on May 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Spotlight Park. Located at 5945 Linwood, Detroit.

Taking place at various bars in Detroit, you celebrate Cinco de Mayo on both May 5 and May 6. Tickets purchased for this event get you free entry into some of the best bars in Detroit, drink deals, and bar crawl commemorative items.
