The Red Hot Chili Peppers brought all the hits, as well as songs off their latest Rick Rubin-produced “Unlimited Love” record, to Comerica Park in Detroit on Sunday (Aug. 14). It’s always a special thing when the Peppers come to town, as drummer Chad Smith hails from Detroit and vocalist Anthony Kiedis is from Grand Rapids.
Roughly 34,000 people were at Comerica Park for the event. The night kicked off with tour openers Thundercat at The Strokes, making way for the Peppers to take the main stage around 8:55 p.m. The Detroit set featured fan favorites such as “Under the Bridge,” “Dani California,” “Californication,” Give it Away” and more, as well as cuts off “Unlimited Love,” such as the new single “Black Summer.” I’ve seen the Peppers at least five times over the past years, and this was definitely one of the highest energy sets I’ve ever seen them perform in Michigan. As a bass player, I’ve always admired Flea, and he was in top form, showing off some of the best slap-and-pop solos I’ve ever seen.
