Big news broke Sunday (April 30), when three Michigan State starters entered the transfer portal. This was right after spring practice, so not a good look.

The latest transfers for the Spartans are Payton Thorne, Charles Brantley and Keon Coleman. But, they aren’t the first. Other players have also entered the transfer portal earlier this season.

Of course, all of this is following Mel Tucker’s big contract following a successful 2021 season, where he had Kenneth Walker III. Then, in 2022, the team went 5-7, which was not super pleasing.

Under his big contract, Tucker is making $9.5 million annually until 2032. Fans, of course, weren’t happy about the latest transfer news. Here’s what some of them said about the news:

  • Reaction to three star MSU football players entering the transfer portal

This one is funny. Wolverine Chronicle says, “NCAA denies Mel Tucker’s appeal to start actual dogs at QB and WR next season.”

Blue By 90 says, “We are just 523 days into Mel Tucker’s 10-year, $95 million contract and these are the current conversations happening over at MSU. Only 2,658 days left!”

Blue By 90 adds, “Jim Harbaugh has a chance this year to put the nail in the coffin for both Ryan Day and Mel Tucker. If they both lose to Michigan again, those fan bases will be calling for their jobs by the end of the season.”

  • Reaction to three star MSU football players entering the transfer portal

Chris Castellani of Barstool jokes, “Today has only left me with one question- What’s up with Mel Tucker’s NFT? Has it dropped in value?”

  • Reaction to three star MSU football players entering the transfer portal

Justin Thind of @247Sports says, “Interesting tidbit: I was told that Coleman made his decision over a week ago. However, those in the program feel that the sudden departure of QB Payton Thorne actually *increases* Coleman’s chances of returning to after testing waters. Make of that assessment what you will.”

  • Reaction to three star MSU football players entering the transfer portal

Huge says, “I think his (Mel Tucker’s) job is on the line this fall. It’s officially hot seat time in the Spartans HC’s office in East Lansing.”

  • Reaction to three star MSU football players entering the transfer portal

Huge adds that, “Mel Tucker used the transfer portal to get him one great season and a 95 million dollar contract. Since then the transfer portal has blown up MSU Football to the point where I don’t know if he can get it back to the level 9.5 million a year warrants it to be at.”
