The City of Troy was originally founded by settlers from Troy, New York.
The first log cabin was built in Troy by Johnson Niles at what is now the intersection of Square Lake and Livernois Roads in 1821.
The township of Troy once included Royal Oak, which seceded in 1832. in 1955 Royal Oak threatened to annex Troy, so Troy avoided being absorbed by Royal Oak by officially becoming their own city in that year.
In 1968, Troy adopted it’s city seal; It shows the Greek goddess Athena- the protector of civilized life.
Today Troy is filled with Skyscrapers, corporate headquarters, hundreds of thousands of workers, fine restaurants, and upscale shopping.
