Happy 59th Birthday Johnny Depp!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOHNNY!

Johnny Depp has been in the headlines since the conclusion of his defamation trial, but he has been captivating us for decades with so many amazing characters. And today, June 9th is his 59th birthday.

Johnny Depp began his career soon after he moved to California and famed actor, Nicholas Cage convinced young Johnny to pursue acting. His first role was in the first A Nightmare On Elm Street in 1984.

But his first real shot into the limelight was when he joined the cast of 21 Jumpstreet in 1987. From there he would collaborate with Tim Burton and help create the heartbreaking sweetness of Edward Scissorhands in 1990.

From 1990 on, Depp would star in numerous films with many being great and some not so great (sometimes just financially). However, it wasn’t until 2003 that Johnny Depp became his most iconic and incredible (and profitable) role as Captain Jack Sparrow. This role cemented him as not only a great actor but easily one of the great money-making powerhouse names of Hollywood. Hopefully, with the trial being concluded, we may once again see Johnny grace the screen again as Captain Jack Sparrow.

  • Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003)

    Well, obviously we can put this on the list of best. I remember wanting to watch this movie again and again the moment Jack Sparrow’s opening scene is him stepping off a sinking boat. It tricks you into thinking that he’s on some mighty ship and then flips the script.

  • Edward Scissorhands (1990)

    Johnny Depp’s first of many collaborations with Tim Burton. Few characters exist that have the sweetness that Depp brings to the screen as Edward Scissorhands. How dark is your soul if you don’t cry a little bit during this movie?

     

  • What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

    It’s rare to not mention this movie along with Johnny’s career. A drama taking Johnny Depp into a highly praised role of Gilbert Grape. A distressed man taking care of his disabled brother (a young Leonardo DiCaprio) trying to find happiness in a rough world.

  • Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street (2007)

    Something that seems synonymous with Johnny is darkly humorous. Many of his roles have a tragic or dark side to counter an otherwise humorous nature.  Sweeney Todd is unique that it takes an extremely dark subject matter of a murdering barber bent on revenge and turns it into a musical.

     

  • Corpse Bride (2005)

    Tim Burton and Depp collab again with an animated film about life and death. Johnny Depp plays a newlywed with cold feet that gets caught up with an unforeseen pack with the dead.
