Sesame Street premiered on November 10, 1969. For over 50 years, the iconic children’s show
has been educating and entertaining countless people all over the world.
The show was the brainchild of Joan Ganz Cooney, Lloyd Morrisett and Jim Henson. Sesame Street featured some of Henson’s most popular Muppet characters. Among them were Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Cookie Monster, Grover and Oscar the Grouch.
Over the show’s history, more and more characters were added. Some of these characters went on to become just as or more popular than the original aforementioned Muppet characters. These characters include The Count, Abby Cadabby, Elmo and Snuffleupagus.
Sesame Street is also a critical hit on top of being loved by viewers. Over the course of its history, the show has won an obscene amount of awards. Among them are over 200 Emmy Awards, 11 Grammy Awards and three Peabody Awards. The show was even honored in 2019 with the Kennedy Center Honors. Plenty of the characters were on hand to take part in the gala event. Of course, things did get awkward when Tom Hanks accidentally was sitting in Big Bird’s seat.
With the advent of the internet, the show’s resources to its young viewers and their parents grew. The official Sesame Street website features all sorts of educational games and learning exercises. It also features printable worksheets and other extras to help preschoolers expand their minds. On top of that, the show’s official YouTube page is packed with all sorts of special videos. In fact, it is where we found the videos that make up our list.
Sure, the show is obviously aimed at young children. However, Sesame Street has featured countless musical guests spanning many genres that adults could enjoy, too. Here are just some of our favorites over the years!
