Why Jon Bon Jovi Considers Shania Twain His ‘Spirit Sister’
Jon Bon Jovi and country superstar Shania Twain have a very unique bond, and it’s not only because they’re both singers. As it turns out, JBJ and Twain both underwent the same vocal surgery by the same doctor.
Bon Jovi has talked about his vocal surgery a lot in the past few months, and it’s a focal point in the new Hulu docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story. This particular surgery is called a vocal fold medialization. According to the Cleveland Clinic, medialization is when a surgeon ” … places an implant into your paralyzed or weak vocal cord. The implant moves a nonfunctioning vocal cord toward the functioning one to allow for better voicing.”
Bon Jovi referred to Twain as his “spirit sister” in an interview with People. Twain had the surgery back in 2018 and talked about it in the press, which is how Bon Jovi knew about it.
He said, “Not only did she reassure me that it would be OK, but I think she also pulled my leg a little bit because she told me I’d be out there a lot sooner than I have been. She says, ‘Well, I told you that because I knew that you might back out otherwise.’ And so, I couldn’t wait to get the operation.”
Twain was one of many guests at the 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year Gala, which honored the Bon Jovi frontman for his years of charitable work in his community. She performed the Bon Jovi classic “Bed of Roses.”
Other guests who took to the stage to honor JBJ were Bruce Springsteen, Melissa Etheridge, Larkin Poe, Jelly roll, Lainey Wilson, Pat Monahan, Jason Isbell, Damiano David, Goo Goo Dolls, The War and Treaty, Mammoth WVH, Marcus King, Sammy Hagar, Orianthi and Brandy Clark.
