Cult films or cult movies, commonly referred to as cult classic, is a film that has acquired a cult following. Films are known for their dedicated, passionate fanbase. Films have multiple viewings, dialogue-quoting, and audience participation. Especially box-office bombs,  and obscure films shunned by the mainstream and hated by critics. The hard thing is defining the term Cult film. The term cult film was used in the 1970s to describe really bad films and midnight movies.

Formula Behind A Cult Movie

Having a chainsaw is not a requirement for a cult movie but it helps. Blood, Gore, and teenagers always making the wrong choice in movies.

1. Having Sex
2. Hiding in the basement
3. Hiding in a barn
4. Running toward the killer

The best films I have found are the ones with a great movie soundtrack or the band with no acting skills trying their hand at movies. Hand it to some musicians who pull off the miracle and do pretty well behind the camera. Phil Collins, Dave Grohl, and Gene Simmons did well and never got nominated for an award. Gene Simmons in two movies one bad and one bad but cool to see him act. Give bands credit for not quitting their day jobs

 Music Makes The Movies

Just a sample of great movies where the bands take the spotlights. Need someday to expand the list to television shows that bands appear on because it would be a fun list to do in the future. Some remember the band on the list. Some bands would like to forget that they ever had the idea to be in a movie in the first place. Drugs were a big part of the film industry. They had to be on drugs for some of these movies to be made. Check them all out with some of the best movie trailers.

• Foo Fighters

  Foo Fighters with Dave Grohl have always done great music videos for their fans. This is a nod to cheesy horror movies from the past. Dave Grohl and the band made their own feature-length horror movie based on the making of their tenth studio album “Medicine At Midnight.” The story sees the band move into a haunted mansion that has a rock and roll history.

• The Beatles

  After the passing of the band’s long-time manager Brian Epstein the lads were on their own. All four of the Fab Four became the manager of the Beatles. The 1st venture was Paul McCartney’s brain-child. Making a movie of a dream he had. It was a disaster of a movie. But still packed with new Beatles music. Lots of Paul is dead conspiracies. Hard to get the plot as the movie is all over the place. Still a favorite of diehard Beatle fans. Complete opposite of “A Hard Days Night.”

• The Ramones

  The film is set in 1980. Vince Lombardi High School keeps losing principals to nervous breakdowns because of the students’ love of rock ‘n’ roll and their disregard for education. The leader of the students, Riff Randall (No Relation), is the biggest Ramones fan at the school and also the worst behavioral problem, in that her disciplinary record fills an entire filing cabinet. She waits in line for three days to get tickets to see the band, hoping to meet Joey Ramone so she can give him a song she wrote for the band, “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School”.

• Aerosmith, Peter Frampton, Bee Gees

  Regarded as one of the worst films ever made but became a cult favorite. In 1978 “Beatles” songs and used them as a vehicle for the then-massive “Bee Gees”, and “Peter Frampton.” The storyline is absolutely rubbish, but you get to see Steve Martin sing Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. “Aerosmith” plays the evil Future Villain Band, but Steven Tyler and Joe Perry at the height of their “Toxic Twins” years of over-indulgence.

• KISS

  “Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park,”  is a 1978 American television film starring American hard rock band Kiss and produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. The movie’s plot revolves around Kiss, who uses their superpowers to battle an evil inventor (Abner Devereaux, played by Anthony Zerbe) and to save a California amusement park from destruction.

• Tenacious D

  Jack Black and Kyle Gass play themselves in this 2006 comedy. The duo search for the guitar pick that all the greatest rock musicians have used to acquire legendary status, but end up in a “rock-off” with Satan himself. Played by Dave Grohl imagine that? The duo embark on a quest to find a legendary guitar pick that possesses supernatural powers.

• This Is Spinal Tap

  “This Is Spinal Tap” A metal band struggling to get back on the charts, including everything from its complicated history of ups and downs, gold albums, name changes, and undersold concert dates, along with the full host of requisite groupies, promoters, hangers-on, and historians, sessions, release events and those special behind-the-scenes moments that keep it all real. Cult Film? Yes of the greatest band ever. 

• Alice Cooper , Iggy Pop , Alex Lifeson

  “Suck,” is a 2009 rock-and-roll vampire horror film starring rock artists “Alice Cooper”, “Iggy Pop” and “Alex Lifeson” of Rush. The film follows a struggling rock band called the Winners as they tour across Canada and the United States. One by one they turn into vampires and become popular.

• Meat Loaf

  In this cult classic, sweethearts Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon), stuck with a flat tire during a storm, discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a transvestite scientist. As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of wild characters, including a rocking biker (Meat Loaf) and a creepy butler (Richard O’Brien). Through elaborate dances and rock songs, Frank-N-Furter unveils his latest creation: a muscular man named “Rocky.”

• Phil Collins

  Phil Collins stars  in “Buster”

  The story of Great Train Robber Buster Edwards, a small-timer who fell in with more ambitious thieves. After the gang robs a London to Glasgow Royal Mail train in 1963, he takes his family into hiding in Mexico but finds that money is no substitute for life back home.
