City of the Week salutes you! This week we throw the spotlight on Clawson shops and cool places around town. Clawson has a great downtown and a lot of character.
Clawson’s Early Name – Pumachug
Clawson was known by another name a long time: Pumachug. The name, Pumachug, originated from the noise that came from the cider mill and sawmill that were located near the intersection of what today is 14 Mile Road and Main Street. It made the noise “puma-chug…puma-chug…puma-chug” all day long! The people of Clawson probably got used to the noise after awhile!
Clawson Shops Rock!
Clawson is a city with lots of great places to eat and shop, and a lot of to see and do! One of our favorite places in Clawson is Doc Sweet’s Candy Company. When you visit Doc Sweet’s they say it’s “Like being a kid again . . . Only Sweeter.” They have so many candies that you might not have seen in decades, like old fashioned penny candy, Zots, Lemon Heads and even Pop Rocks! Look for the famous Doc Sweet’s “Candy Machine” van parked out front on Rochester Road.
Joel’s Notes – Clawson
Joe’s Army Navy Surplus is another one of the Clawson shops that I love to check in with. Joe’s has all kinds of military, hunting and camping style clothes, boots and gear! You might never need a camouflage outfit, but if you do, Joe’s Army Navy Surplus can help you blend into your surroundings.
Clawson also features many cool outdoor art installations including my favorite on the side of the House of Optical that features famous people that wear glasses (John Belushi’s Blues Brothers Wayfarer sunglasses!!!) and a series of art reproductions of works that are on display at The Detroit Institute of Arts.
If you are looking for some good old-fashioned, homestyle cooking, you need to visit Old Port Family Dining. GREAT FOOD! A welcome, friendly “at home” feel and service. Everybody is always in a great mood at The Old Port!! I recommend the chocolate milk! Check out Clawson shops! They rock!
