I know here at the Riff our favorite shows are of the rock variety, but I think we can all agree the next best thing would be a comedy show, right? Stand-up comedy as long been a passion of mine, both to watch and perform. It started at a young age when my family and I saw Steven Wright at Meadowbrook many moons ago, and the love for the art form has only intensified since.

Steven may not be coming to Michigan this year, but some of my other favorite comedians are! Some of these may be unfamiliar to you while others may be a blast from the past that you totally forgot about. Here are five must-see stand-up comedians coming to Michigan in 2023. Some are coming to Detroit, some will be going to Pontiac, a few will require trips to Grand Rapids, and hey, one is even going to be in Warren. Let’s get to the list.

  • Anthony Jeselnik

September 23rd, Masonic Cathedral Theater – Detroit, MI

Anthony Jeselnik is one of the greatest comedians in the game–just ask him. His sense of humor is one of a kind. It’s best described as “shockingly dark.” He doesn’t just go there, he surpasses this proverbial there. Anthony will tell jokes no other comedian would dare to attempt. Leave the easily offended at home. Laughs are guaranteed.

  • Kyle Kinane

September 15th, Wealthy Theater – Grand Rapids, MI

September 16th, Flagstar Strand Theater For The Performing Arts – Pontiac, MI

Kyle Kinane never fails to make me laugh. He’s laidback and a fantastic storyteller, that will definitely have you hooked. Something I’ve long respected about Kyle is his ability to make fun of himself. He’s great at self-deprecation, which I can always relate to and appreciate. It’s part of what makes him effortlessly cool. I had the privilege of working with Kyle during my time interning at Comedy Central, on a web series called 30 Seconds Over Washington. Just noticed it’s no longer on YouTube, what’s up with that, Google? He was a great dude and always made me laugh.

  • Rory Scovel

August 23rd, The Crofoot – Pontiac, MI

August 24th, The Pyramid Scheme Grand Rapids, MI

I could watch Rory Scovel perform stand-up all day. He’s great at what he does. He’s laidback, conversational, and slightly apathetic…which I can relate to. He’s going to be doing a couple of shows in Michigan, so you have some options on when and where you’d like to see him. I recommend you do.

  • Jeff Ross

September 29th, Andiamo Celebrity Showroom – Warren, MI

Jeff Ross, The Roast Mater General, is coming to Warren! You’ve likely seen Jeff on one of the Celebrity Roasts on Comedy Central. When it comes to roasting, there’s nobody better. It’s not all burns and crowd work, though. He’s very funny and puts on a great show. I met Jeff at a Tigers home opener a few years ago and he was good people. Hope saying that doesn’t hurt his brand.

  • Eddie Griffin

October 14th, Sound Board at Motorcity Casino Hotel – Detroit, MI

The man, the myth, the legend is touring again! I’ve always been a huge fan of Eddie’s movies. He had an incredible run as a featured actor in the early to mid aughts. He carried the Deuce Bigalow franchise. Seriously, go back and watch him in those, he was hilarious. Constantly quotable. I also loved him in Date Movie and can’t forget Undercover Brother. He’s coming to Detroit and it’s a must-see. Eddie is a pro.
