Peter Frampton Reveals Muscle Disorder as Reason for Farewell Tour
Peter Frampton and his recently announced farewell tour seemingly came out of left field. However, the iconic guitarist has revealed that a rare muscle disorder is the reason why he’s hitting the road one last time.
Frampton appeared on CBS This Morning and talked about being diagnosed with Inclusion-Body Myositis (IBM), a rare, incurable condition that causes muscles to weaken slowly over time.
He was diagnosed with IBM about three and a half years ago after a fall on stage. While its progress has been slow, Frampton noticed some significant changes after wrapping up a tour in Fall 2018.
Frampton noted in the interview with CBS This Morning that IBM eventually affects finger mobility, which is obviously essential as a guitarist.
“I’m a perfectionist and I do not want to go out there and feel like, ‘Oh I can’t, this isn’t good,’” said Frampton. “That would be a nightmare for me. It’s my passion, I’ve been playing guitar for 60 years. Started when I was eight and now I’m 68. So, I’ve had a very good run.”
Frampton continued, “The reason I’m calling it the ‘farewell tour,’ again, is because I know that I will be at the top of my game for this tour and I will make it through this and people won’t be saying, ‘Oh you know, he can’t play as good.’ I can. But we just don’t know for how long.”
Frampton recently founded the Peter Frampton Myositis Research Fund at Johns Hopkins, where he’s receiving treatment. One dollar from every ticket sold on his farewell tour will go toward the fund.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning next Friday, March 1 at 10 AM local time at LiveNation.com. (Check local listings for pre-sale information). VIP packages will also be available at Frampton.com.
