VIDEO: Micky Dolenz Looks Back on when Jimi Hendrix Opened for The Monkees
There have been a number of strange opening act/headliner combos in rock history, but one of those most famous combos was when the Jimi Hendrix Experience opened for The Monkees in 1967.
Micky Dolenz recalled this infamous pairing on a new episode of AXS TV’s Mixtape, which will air on October 31 at 8:30 PM.
In the video below, Dolenz says, “I’m at the Monterey Pop Festival, and all of a sudden these three guys come on stage in all these psycho-jello clothes and stuff, and they just looked incredible. That was, of course, The Jimi Hendrix Experience.”
After Dolenz convinced producers of booking Hendrix as The Monkees’ opening act due to their “very theatrical style,” the two acts hit the road. However, The Jimi Hendrix Experience only lasted a handful of gigs after being booed one too many times by the throngs of teenyboppers who were there to see The Monkees.
