Where Is Morpheus in the Matrix 4 Trailer?
After nearly 8 years since the release of Matrix Revolutions, we have gotten our first look at the trailer for the fourth Matrix film. The Matrix Resurrections releases in theaters and on HBO Max this year on December 22nd. The Trailer offers plenty of clues for die-hard fans to dissect and attempt to predict. Most notably, both Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anna Moss) are in the trailer and returning for the saga. But missing from the iconic trio of heroes is Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and so far there’s no reason as to why Fishburne wouldn’t have reprised his role.
Interestingly, the movie does still have a Morpheus-like character, from training Neo in a dojo, to offering him the colored pills and wearing the trademark shades. So, if the movie calls for a Morpheus character why isn’t it Morpheus we’re seeing, in the same way, we still have Neo and Trinity?
It could all be thanks to the 2005 Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying game, The Matrix Online. While it’s impossible to know for certain if the Wachowski’s consider the 2005 Matrix Online to be canon to the film or not, it does hold a potential answer. The game’s history does pick up where the films left off and in one section, Morpheus is ambushed by an assassin in a back alley and killed.
It’s possible that Morpheus is still alive and will serve some greater role in the movie, one the Wachowski’s didn’t want to give away in the trailer. We’ll have to wait until December 22nd to find out what, if anything, that may be.
