Dave Grohl Spends Off Day in Australia Feeding the Homeless
Foo Fighters are currently on tour in Australia. On an off day, Dave Grohl used his time to cook up some BBQ for homeless people in Melbourne.
Grohl partnered with the local non-profit organization The Big Umbrella. Together, they cooked and serveed over 400 meals to those in need. The organization wrote via Instagram, “Our friends on the street were treated to an epic American style bbq with all the trimmings prepared by rock legend Dave Grohl of the @foofighters.”
The Big Umbrella added, “The vibe was at an all-time high at Fed Square for this very special one-off lunch feast. It will be a day ‘our friends on the streets’ will never forget as they brushed up against a rock legend and one of the nicest guys on the planet who genuinely cares for people in need. No words can fully capture the impact of this positive experience.”
Grohl has a history of using his love of cooking up BBQ to give back. In November 2018, Grohl stopped by a local firehouse near his home in Southern California to cook up some meals for hungry firefighters. At that time, local firefighters were working tirelessly to extinguish some devastating wildfires.

Grohl has cooked for the homeless on two other occasions in 2023. In February, the Foo Fighters frontman towed his large smoker to the Los Angeles-based homeless shelter called The Hope Mission. Once there, he cooked countless pounds of meat for 450 unhoused people and 50 staff members. TMZ reported Grohl showed up at the shelter around midnight and then proceeded to prepare food for the next 16 hours.
Then, in early March, Grohl and some other volunteers made thousands of meals for Feed the Streets LA (FTS LA.) The non-profit describes itself as “a community-based mutual aid organization that collects donated food, hygiene products, clothing, and educational items for hand-to-hand distribution.”
According to FTS LA’s Instagram, Grohl contacted the organization personally and wanted to help make and distribute meals. They wrote, “He spent 18 hours straight smoking brisket, ribs and pork—with a cooking crew. They stayed up all night and into the sunrise.”
