‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’ Trailer Unveiled, Release Date Confirmed
At long last, the trailer for Becoming Led Zeppelin has been unleashed, and fans can finally save the date on the authorized documentary’s release.
The trailer below is chock-full of archival footage of the band, along with new sit-down interviews with Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones. Additionally, the documentary features a never-before-heard interview with John Bonham.
Becoming Led Zeppelin opens in IMAX theaters on February 7, 2025, with select early access screenings taking place on February 5 and 6. Tickets are on sale now at IMAX.com.
Back in May, it was announced that the Zeppelin documentary had been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics in North America, Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia (excluding Japan), and Benelux. At that time, Deadline quoted a Sony Pictures Classics spokesperson, who said, “We loved this film from the first moment we saw it. It has been nothing short of extraordinary to witness the organic process [director/writer] Bernard [MacMahon], [writer] Allison [McGourty] , and their team have taken to sculpt what has turned out to be THE definitive film on the origins of Led Zeppelin.”
A Brief Timeline of Becoming Led Zeppelin
News of this Led Zeppelin film first broke in May 2019, which was part of that year’s celebration of the legendary band’s 50th anniversary. At the time, the film was in post-production, and it was reported it would cover the band’s early musical history in the 1960s, their initial meeting and will end with the release of Led Zeppelin II, which famously dethroned The Beatles’ Abbey Road from the top of the Billboard album charts.
This is the very first time Zeppelin has authorized and participated in a documentary in their history. The doc will feature new interviews with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones. Additionally, it’ll feature rare archival interviews with the late John Bonham.
In August 2021, director Bernard MacMahon confirmed to Rolling Stone the film’s title. He told the publication, “‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’ is a film that no one thought could be made. The band’s meteoric rise to stardom was swift and virtually undocumented. Through an intense search across the globe and years of restoration of the visual and audio archive found, this story is finally able to be told.”
In September 2021, Becoming Led Zeppelin premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Shortly thereafter, a teaser of the film was released.
Deadline also reported that the film, which was yet to be officially completed, received a 10-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival.
A release date for Becoming Led Zeppelin is still unknown. However, now that Sony Pictures Classics is involved, here’s hoping the film will get the fast-track for release, as it will undoubtedly bring the band’s many generations-worth of fans out to movie theaters worldwide.
