Mike at ATTACKHUNGER inside Rust Belt Market is an artist with a cause! Check out our Ferndale photos with The WCSX City of the Week.

Ferndale is one of my favorite places to go. It’s lively. Ferndale has a great selection of restaurants and shopping. I’ve gone to Painting With a Twist several times with my daughter, Mackenzie.  It’s a fun night out together.  Last time we went, we had dinner at Bobcat Bonnie’s and then headed to our painting class. Much like karaoke, when I paint, I always think, “This will be the time when I do something magical.”  I’m still waiting on the magic, but the fun is easy to find. Jim O’Brien stopped by the Crow’s Nest! Check out his video below for a cool history lesson.  Then scroll down to read Joel’s notes from Ferndale and check out our Ferndale photos!

Do u know the #history of the Crows nest on #Woodward Avenue in #Ferndale? Thought I’d check it out. And congrats for being the City of the Week!

Joel’s Notes:

Ferndale is a favorite City of the Week of mine! The people that you meet there are always creative, upbeat, and friendly! My trip to downtown Ferndale was on the first sunny day in weeks, and that seemed to get everyone into an even better mood!

My first stop in Ferndale is always Found Sound old school record store. It’s like a shrine to vinyl records! They have thousands of collectible records for sale. The vintage record store “stand up” displays and posters are like rock music museum displays! Found Sound has tons of other collectible physical media like CDs, DVDs 8-track, and cassette tapes. I hear they even have some reel-to-reel tapes!

Murals and Rust Belt Market

Next, I checked out some awesome mural art in downtown. I love that one on the side of Rust Belt Market – The Gorilla in The Detroit Tigers Sneakers sitting on the Detroit skyline is so cool! Did you know that Ferndale has a mural program to encourage people to paint more murals on public and private property?  Find out more at downtownferndale.com

The Rust Belt Market is made of many unique storefront booths. I watched Dani feed the (tiny) Poisonous Dart Frog in the terrarium of The Bar inside Rust Belt. Congratulations to Emily, Patrick, and Tim at The Plant House on their business’s g r o w t h…haha! Graphic Artist Mike and his Attack Hunger cool clothing line help benefit charities like Alternative For Girls, C.O.T.S, and the Y.W.C.A. Interm House.

Ol’ Boomer Uncle Joel

At my last stop of the day, I met Spencer and Brandon at Detroit City Skateboard Company. They took pity on Ol’ Boomer Uncle Joel, as I asked them about the latest skateboard gear and brands. I did manage to finally establish my credibility with them when I mentioned a place I used to skate that I got kicked out of.  Coincidently, it’s the same place they got kicked out 25 years later! (0K- maybe like 35 years later)
