Hy’s Cider Mill in Romeo

Hy's Cider Mill in Romeo is all about family.  Three generations of Goldsteins have loved and cared for this mill.  Jim and Michelle Goldstein are the owners.  Hyman, Jim's dad, is the one who started the cider mill.  Joe, Jim's grandfather, bought the orchard. Jim says he remembers being 5 years old and going to Eastern Market to sell the cider with his dad!

Hy's Cider Mill History

Joe and Ettie Goldstein immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s. Joe purchased a 160-acre farm on 37 Mile Road in the 1930s and he and his family (Ettie and their two sons, Gustave and Hyman) started farming.  The farm was huge and split into sections: crops, livestock, and orchards. As the boys grew older, they took on different sections of the farm. Hyman was in charge of the orchard.  Hyman married, had six kids and they cared for the orchard and sold apples at the Eastern Market.

In 1967, Hyman took a crop of apples to a cider mill in Mt.Clemens for pressing.  He started selling "Hy's Cider" at Eastern Market.  Six years later, Hyman and his family opened Hy's Cider Mill.  Their first cider press could make 200 gallons of cider an hour. Today, the press can produce 1,200 gallons per hour!
