The History of Parmenter’s Northville Cider Mill

Benijah Aldrich Parmenter (nicknamed “Madge”) was born in Novi, Michigan on May 7, 1842. Benijah enlisted in the Navy and served during the Civil War.  After the war, he returned home and used his mustering out pay to establish Parmenter’s Mill on Baseline Road in 1873.

The mill was originally powered by a team of horses and produced vinegar. In 1880, the mill moved to a threshing machine engine and ground up to 10,000 bushels of apples annually. Two years later, the mill began using a steam engine, which remained in use until 1910. Ever since then, Parmenter’s Northville Cider Mill has used an electric motor. This amazing cider mill turns 150 years old next year!
