City of The Week Factoids - Rochester City of the Week

Congratulations to Fraser: City of the Week with WCSX! Fraser, per their website, started around 1858 when Alexander J. Frazer purchased land in 1858.

The first official business to open was a blacksmith in 1856 (Yes, I know the date is before, but that’s how these old towns get laid out!). A barrel stave mill opened in 1865. And in 1960 the first postmaster Leonard Scott was appointed.

By 1895 the city of Fraser was incorporated and by 1895 has a post office, town hall, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a stave mill, a cigar manufacturing company, a church and school, several stores, and a railroad depot. The population was 230.

As of today, Fraser’s population is over 14,000.

Here are some Fraser Factoids

  • How do I get out of HERE??

One of the most trending things going on right now is Escape Rooms. And Fraser has one of the best with Think it Out Escape!

  • What happened to Alexander J. Frazer?

While Alexander J. Frazer was a well-known lawyer and his land purchases led to the core of Fraser, what happened to him? According to Fraser’s history, he drowned, but the site says “some time” during 1871. Seems a little mysterious to me…

  • A comedy Legend!

The Amazing Johnathan is from Frazer. His magic/comedy act made him a headliner in Vegas.

  • I wanna be an artist!

Well, I already am, but if you really want to be one of the best, Frazer has the Arts Academy in the Woods. Free public schooling for Middle School and High School. Wish I knew about that when I was that age!
