Congratulations to St. Clair Shores: City of the Week with WCSX! According to the St. Clair Shores’ official website, St. Clair Shores was originally part of Erin Township from 1843 to 1911.

St. Clair Shores was incorporated as a village in 1925 and was not established as a city until 1951.

Around the time of the First World War, St. Clair Shores became a stomping ground for gamblers, rum runners, and tourists because of Prohibition.  This wild and exciting life helped bring attention to St. Clair Shores, both good and bad.

After the Second World War, St. Clair Shores became one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Detroit.

The current population as of the 202o census is 58,874.

Let’s learn some St. Clair Shores Factoids:

  • Longest Roller Coaster

    St. Clair Shores was home to the Jefferson Beach Amusement Park. The park had the longest Roller Coaster in the United States. In operation since 1927, the park was eventually brought down by a fire in 1955. The owners attempted to rebuild but eventually just helped expand the marina instead.

  • The Nautical Mile

    Located on Jefferson between 9 and 10 1/2-mile roads, The Nautical Mile boasts a plethora of  entertainment, store, dining, sports, recreation, and events

  • Miss America!

    Here she is…Miss America! St. Clair Shores is home to one of the longest-running pageants and is a member of The Miss America Organization. They also provide many young woman with opportunities with scholarships.

  • Time for Music!

    St. Clair Shores was also home to Car City Records. They were one of the premiere places to get your record on! Unfortunately, they closed in 2011, but many of their former employees were part of the Detroit Music scene. There is also the Crow’s Nest East, which was a popular music establishment in the 60s’.

  • Parades!

    St. Clair Shores Parade has been going for 70 years! Runs from Jefferson at Nine Mile traveling North to 11 Mile Road.
