It appears Michiganders will soon be getting a new way to travel to Canada. I have fond memories taking the Amtrak train to Toronto with my family as a kid, so I’m happy about this development!

  • Amtrak plans to add a new service route

The proposed route that would take passengers from Detroit to Toronto. It would stop in Windsor, Ontario, too.

  • The new route would be a merger

In a press release, Amtrak say it supports proposed merger between Canadian Pacific Railway Limited (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS) railways. It would allow the different railways used by the companies. If the merger goes through CP will work with Amtrak to increase routes, including adding a new Detroit to Toronto route.

  • Route details

The new route would travel through the Detroit River Tunnel to Windsor and then head to Toronto. It would also include connections to VIA Rail Canada.

  • When

Right now, there’s no timeline for the new route. Hopefully soon!

  • More expansions

Amtrak is also planning to add more trains running between Chicago and Milwaukee. They’re also looking to add a route to St. Paul, Minnesota.

  • Agreement timeline

The first step to making this a reality is having the agreement between CP and KCS approved by the U.S. Surface Transportation Board. The proposal is expected to be sent to them “soon,” according to a statement.
