City of The Week Factoids - Rochester City of the Week

Congratulations to Belleville: City of the Week with WCSX! According to downriver.com, Belleville became a village in 1905 after breaking away from Van Buren Township. Belleville became an official city on May 14th, 1946.

Belleville is home to the French Landing Dam. The dam was built by DTE in 1926. The dam created the Belleville Lake, which is over 6 miles across.

The last census in 2010 showed there was a population of 3991 in Belleville.

Let’s check out some Belleville Factoids:

  • Strawberry Fields!

Belleville is home to the National Strawberry Festival. A three-day festival that takes place in June.

  • Home of Techno?

Arguably the birthplace of Techno music. Some great techno music artists call Belleville home like Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, and Juan Atkins.

  • Dammmmmm Son!

As mentioned, DTE purchased land in Belleville and built the French Landing Dam in 1926.
