When you think of Detroit, you probably think of cars, Motown, and Detroit Rock City. I do. The history of Detroit is interlaced with automobiles and music. Woodward Avenue made history as the first paved road. Henry Ford’s first venture into car companies was the DAC: Detroit Automobile Company. While Detroit has had its share of high highs (and low lows) but cars and music have been our common touchpoints of pride and community. What better way to celebrate both than with car songs from Motor City? Songs from Michigan artists that have a motor/car element to them: that’s what this is all about.
I asked on the WCSX Facebook page “Name a car-related classic rock song.” We had hundreds of responses… thank you all! Here are the most mentioned songs that are NOT from Michigan artists:
“I Can’t Drive 55.” “Panama.” “I’m in Love with My Car.” “Little GTO.” “Mustang Sally.” “Drive My Car.” and “Pink Cadillac.”

We used these songs to do a car-themed Power Lunch. You can join me for the Power Lunch at noon on weekdays. On most Fridays, we have a Blue Plate Special where we pick a theme and celebrate classic rock with a theme. One of my favorites is the Home-Grown Blue Plate Special. We usually do that one about once a month and play all Michigan artists for the entire Power Lunch (noon til 1 PM).
