City of The Week Factoids - Rochester City of the Week

Congratulations to Flat Rock: City of the Week with WCSX! According to flatrockmi.org began as a Wyandot settlement. The first to settle in Flat Rock was Michael Vreeland and his five sons between the years of 1811 and 1820.

By 1828, Flat Rock had several stores, two sawmills, a wood carding mill, a flour mill, and over 250 settlers.  Flat Rock was designated a village in 1923 and a city by 1965.

The real growth came when Henry Ford built the Ford Motor Company Lamp Factory in the 1920s. The factory and village grew for the next 3 decades.

Time for Flat Rock Factoids:

  • Ford Mustang

Currently the Ford Mustang is being built at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant since 2005.

  • Water Power

Henry Ford was interested in the water power potential of the Huron River, so in 1925 he built the Ford Motor Company Lamp Factory.

  • Massive Growth

Flat Rock has grown considerably in the past ten years. Construction beginning or completed since 2000 includes a Playscape, a High School, a Community Baseball Complex, an Ice Skating Rink, a Community Recreation Center, and some condominiums.

  • Keep a eye on those storms

Flat Rock has a higher overall tornado average in Michigan and a 66% average over the United States as a whole. So take those tornado sirens seriously if you hear them and take cover.
