In 1884, a school administrator named the local school district Hazel Park School District, after the many hazelnut bushes that grew wild at that time. The city later adopted the name from the school district.
The official slogan of Hazel Park is “The Gateway to Oakland County”
Settlers began moving into Hazel Park in the 1840’s because of the rich soil and flat ground that was perfect for farming.
The first farmer in what would later become Hazel Park was Anthony Neusius. His 80 acre farm was located South of Nine Mile Road and West of John R.
Hazel Park has direct access to both I-696 and I-75, making it an ideal location for the recently built Amazon fulfillment warehouse.
