In the early 20th century, a developer named Joeseph Sawyer had a canal dredged between two small lakes (Dollar Lake and Cass Lake) to create a new larger lake that he called Keego Harbor.
“Keego” is an Ojibwas Native American word that means fish.
In 1902, small lots for cabins and cottages went on sale to Detroiters.
Keego Harbor was marketed as a place where people could “spit on the street without getting a ticket..”, meaning that it was intended to be a “hang loose” kind of town.
The “hang loose” vibe led Detroit’s notorious Purple Gang to spend their Summers in Keego Harbor in the 1920’s.
Keego Harbor started out as a resort town, but residents now live there year-round for the resort town atmosphere that still exists.
Now it’s time to test your knowledge… take the Keego Harbor City of the Week quiz HERE!
