Get Your Pickle Here!

My wife for many years asked me to get her a Yodeling Pickle for our Christmas Tree but I always forgot till this year. I finally bought it and now it rests snuggly in our tree yodeling at strange times morning and night. Is hanging a pickle in your tree one of your family’s traditions? If someone asked you about the origin, would you say it was a German thing? Many historians and researchers have done their homework and find that the actual origin is more of a mystery. Here are some of the origins, myths and fun facts.

  • 1. It came from Germany!

YouGov conducted research that found that only 8% of Germans are aware of the Christmas Pickle and only 2% even practice it.

  • 2. Pickle City Michigan!

Barrien Springs Michigan was named Christmas Pickle Capital in 1955 and have run an annual pickle fest for many years. The annual Pickle Festival returned last July after a 15 year absence. Why in July? I have no idea, but I am no pickle expert!

  • 3. Just One Pickle Sir!

One origin story says that, a German born, Union solider, while in a Confederate prison begged for something to eat and was given a pickle on Christmas Eve. And by having this pickle, he survived and started the tradition of hiding a pickle in his family’s Christmas tree to honor it. Oh and enjoy this pickle Christmas song!
