The name Southgate was adopted because the community is the southern gateway to metropolitan Detroit area.

Today, the “gate” of Southgate is I-75, M-85 Fort Street (M-85) , Dix-Toledo Highway (US-25)
Southgate is known for it’s neighborhoods, good schools, parks and a fine library.
The Conrail / CSX Transportation freight trains that run between Detroit and Toledo, Ohio, runs through the northwest corner of Southgate and is notable for the large grade crossing (one of the largest in the world) through the intersection of Northline and Allen Roads.
