Ken interviewing Paul McCartney to promote the soundtrack to “Give My Regards To Broadstreet” in 1985.
On February 9, 1964 an event occurred that changed my life forever. I was 12 years old. The Calvert family assembled in front of our modest 15” black and white TV to witness a musical event that would change my world. The Beatles were playing the Ed Sulivan Show. “All My Loving” was performed perfectly. My two older sisters went insane and even my parents seemed to reluctantly enjoy it. I had always loved the radio and Top-40 music. After that night, I knew I had to be a part of music and rock and roll.
I was born in 1951 and raised in Detroit. I took broadcast, voice-acting courses at OCC in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
I spent the forty-five years in radio and freelance voice-over announcer.
I began my radio career in 1973 at W4 in Detroit. I then went on to WABX in 1975.
Next, I went out West and spent a year a KOME in San Jose. I loved the weather, but missed Detroit radio.
I came home and back to WABX.
In 1977, I was offered a job with CBS Records in Chicago (Sony Music Corporation) as a regional promotion and marketing manager specializing in artist development.
The best move I ever made was in 1981 when was offered a job at WRIF. For 11 years I enjoyed some of the best days of my life.
All good things come to an end and I departed “The Riff” for WLLZ and then WJR.
I happily spent the final 16 years at WCSX. I retired from radio late 2016.
The number one highlight out of the many great moments over my forty-five-year career was having the opportunity to introduce Bruce Springsteen to Bob Seger at The Pine Knob Music Pavilion on Sept 2, 1978. The two had never met.
